Sometimes the support team may ask you to send a screen recording to illustrate an issue or a specific action you performed. In this article, we've put together a guide on how to do this on different devices.
Windows
To make a screen recording, you can use any app you like. Here are some guides that may be useful, depending on your device brand.
1. How to screen record in Clipchamp
2. Screen Recording With Snipping Tool (for Windows 11)
If you have Windows 11, the Snipping Tool has a screen recording option that lets you draw a box around just that portion of the desktop you want to capture. This could be a particular window or, if you're making a tutorial about the Start Menu, just the area that the menu takes up. However, if your app's window might move around or take up the full screen, you can just draw a box around the entire desktop.
To screen record with Windows 11's Snipping Tool, follow these steps:
- Launch Snipping Tool. The easiest way to do this is by hitting Windows + Shift + S. This will skip loading the Snipping Tool's main window and take you straight to the part where you can click a button to begin recording.
-
Click the video camera icon to enable screen recording mode (if it's not enabled already).
- Draw a box around the portion of the screen you wish to capture. If it's the whole screen, draw a box around the entire desktop. If it's a window, draw around that window.
-
Mute or unmute the microphone and system sounds by clicking them. If you want to record yourself talking, obviously keep the mic on.
- Click the Start recording button.
-
You'll see a countdown and then the Snipping Tool starts screen recording.
-
Click Stop to end the recording or Pause to temporarily halt it
- Once you have stopped your screen recording, you will see a preview window where you can play back the video you just created.
- Click the Save button or hit CTRL + S to save your screen recording as an MP4 file. MP4 is the only supported file format.
MacOS
You can use Screenshot or QuickTime player to make a video recording of the entire screen or just a selected portion of it.
Use the Screenshot toolbar
To view the Screenshot toolbar, press these three keys together: Shift, Command, and 5. You will see on-screen controls for recording the entire screen, recording a selected portion of the screen, or capturing a still image of your screen:
Use QuickTime Player
1. Open QuickTime Player from your Applications folder, then choose File > New Screen Recording from the menu bar.
- If you see the on-screen controls described above, follow those steps.
- If you see the Screen Recording window described below, follow those steps.
2. Before starting your recording, you can click the arrow next to the Record button
to change the recording settings:
- To record your voice or other audio with the screen recording, choose a microphone. To monitor that audio during recording, adjust the volume slider. If you get audio feedback, lower the volume or use headphones with a microphone.
- To show a black circle around your pointer when you click, choose Show Mouse Clicks in Recording.
3. To start recording, click the Record button
and then take one of these actions:
- Click anywhere on the screen to begin recording the entire screen.
- Or drag to select an area to record, then click Start Recording within that area.
4. To stop recording, click the Stop button
in the menu bar, or press Command-Control-Esc (Escape).
5. After you stop recording, QuickTime Player automatically opens the recording. You can now play, edit, or share the recording.
